February 2025 - Quilt Show Judging
February 13th

This is a hybrid meeting.

This month a few of our talented guild mates will be teaching us all about how quilts are judged when they are entered into a quilt show.
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:
In order to give each quilt equal consideration, the quilt is judged in the order that you would make the quilt.

The Pathway System of judging has five basic steps-
1. Visual Impact – the WOW factor, what drew you to make this quilt – was it the colors, design, or techniques, etc.

2. Elements of Design – now you’re looking at color/value, scale, variety, balance and unity. When you purchase a pattern, most of this is done for you. These elements are especially important in art quilts.

3. General Appearance – is the quilt clean, free from odor, stains, pet hair? No loose threads. Look for bleeding, faded color, any problems with the surface designs.

4. Technical Aspects – precise joining of blocks, points not cut off, long seams should appear straight. Applique stitches smooth. No shadowing of dark fabric. Basically, good workmanship.

5. Finishing – quilting motifs, do they fit the space and theme of the quilt. Bindings edge treatments, all makings removed.

Of course there are many details to look for under each of these steps, the challenge is always to frame everything in a positive or constructive manner with the heart of the quilter in mind.
