Chiffon Scarf Collage
See how a monochromatic color scheme combined with a strong use of value creates a great quilt. Both the background and appliqué motifs feature a range of values. For the background, use an ombré fabric gradating through light, medium, and dark values. For the motifs, select both solids and prints (for visual texture), also in a range of values. Because we use a chiffon scarf overlay, sheer fabrics work well and add an intriguing “how did you do that?” aspect.
Once the motifs are fused and a chiffon scarf pinned over the top, you will outline stitch around them to appliqué and quilt at the same time without any marking.
Below are examples of Kathie's finished pieces. Effervescence and It’s Easy Being Green have an overlay of a vintage chiffon scarf. These examples demonstrate the importance of value in quilts, and the ease of appliqué and quilting at the same time with the chiffon overlay. You may also notice the use of transparent fabrics in the green quilt.
